Perception & Presence

How you are perceived, your reputation, and the choices that shape both.

Why this matters

People decide who you are long before you open your mouth. They read your face, your clothes, your handshake, your LinkedIn photo and the tone of your last email, and they make a call. Most of the time you never hear about it. You just notice that someone else got the promotion, the client or the seat at the table.

I have spent fifteen years studying those split-second judgments, and here is the good news: perception is not luck. It is a set of signals, and signals can be chosen.

What surprises most people is how few of those signals are about appearance. Yes, people notice what you wear. They notice just as quickly whether you answer emails on time, whether you remember a name, how you treat the person who brings the coffee, and what a search engine says about you when you are not in the room. All of it adds up to a story about you, and if you do not write it, someone else will.

These articles cover the whole range: first impressions, executive presence, emotional intelligence, reputation, your digital footprint, recognition at work and the small moments that quietly shape how others see you. Use them to close the gap between who you are and how you come across.

Much of this work started with my book The Image of Leadership, now in an updated tenth anniversary edition and in special editions for financial services, retail and consumer goods, women in leadership and more. Discover Your Fair Advantage takes the next step: finding the strengths that make you the obvious choice, and making sure people actually notice them.

If you want a starting point today, my online course How You Resonate shows the seven personas people read in you and how each one lands. If you want someone in your corner while you change the signals, that is what coaching is for.

Questions I hear most

How long does it take to form a first impression?

A few seconds, and research suggests the first judgments about trustworthiness form in a fraction of a second. The bigger issue is how long they last. People look for evidence that confirms their first read, so changing an impression takes far more effort than making a good one. More in How long does it take to form a first impression?

Can you change how others perceive you?

Yes, because perception rests on signals you control: how you look, how you behave, how you communicate, what shows up about you online and the environment you work in. Change the signals consistently and the perception follows, more slowly than you would like.

How do I find out how others see me?

Ask people who have no reason to flatter you, then work through my course How You Resonate. It shows how all seven personas land, and how to choose the one the room needs.

How do I fix a bad first impression?

Not with one grand gesture. Acknowledge what went wrong if it matters, then give people new evidence, consistently and over time, until it outweighs the first read. The step-by-step is in How to overcome a bad first impression.

Is impression management the same as being fake?

No. Faking it means sending signals that do not match who you are. Impression management means making sure the signals you send match who you really are. One erodes trust, the other builds it. More in What is impression management?

Which of your books should I start with?

If you want to understand how others see you and how to lead that perception, start with The Image of Leadership, or the special edition for your industry. If you want to find what sets you apart and make it impossible to overlook, read Discover Your Fair Advantage.

Do you coach individuals on presence and perception?

Yes. Coaching is for individuals and corporate teams who want change that lasts. For one specific question, a Rent My Brain session is the faster route.
