People sometimes consider the products we use and their packaging to be two separate things—the product is the thing we want, and its packaging is just a piece of trash to be thrown away. But the most successful packaging designs, however, prove that a well-designed package can complement or even enhance the product it was designed to carry. Too often what’s shown on the outside is not really what you get on the inside. Usually, you don’t find chips packaging with a see-through part or transparent packaging. Instead, the outside package shows perfectly shaped and intact chips in a fresh and appealing way. We all know the inside is somehow different. Yes, there are chips inside, but not those we saw on the outside. Inside, they seem more ordinary, and there are usually many that are broken into little fragments. But we still like them. We are still into them. We basically accept the scam. What’s the lesson here? With a perfect appearance on the outside, people willingly buy into you and might still accept you if you’re not as perfect on the inside. The other way around is invariably much harder.
Those expectations are the same for leaders. While leaders come in different shapes and sizes, there are still certain expectations of how we want them to look. For participants of my training sessions, for individual clients I coach, and for the readers of this blog, what I hope for is that they are aware of the importance of their packaging, that they have the ability to present a package that represents their product in the best possible way, that their packaging carries them even through tough times and upcoming leadership challenges, that their packaging doesn’t distract anyone from the great things they are able to do, that their packaging stands out for the right reasons.
